According to its technological characteristics, there are two kinds of gold plating: non-cyanide gold plating and cyanide gold plating. Cyanide bath is divided into high cyanide and low cyanide bath. Cyanide-free plating solution is mostly used in sulfite gold plating solution.

According to its concentration, the gold plating solution with water is generally acidic, and its gold content is low, up to 0.4 ~ 0.5g/L. This bath is low cost, so there is less loss from the solution. The color of the gold layer obtained from this plating solution is blue-gold, which is especially suitable for large-scale plating, and the processing cost is low, and the gold-plated small hardware such as buttons and belt buckles is required.

The gold plating solution is divided according to its function. Pre-gold plating refers to pre-gold plating in a specific gold plating solution before positive gold plating and then transferring to the normal gold plating process. Re-gold plating after pre-gold treatment has several advantages:

1) Ensure the bonding force of the gold-plated layer.

2) Reduce the possibility of contamination of the positive gold plating tank.

3) Economical and practical, cost reduction.

4) The compactness of the gold-plated layer can be improved.

According to the service life of the gold plating solution, there are so-called pure gold plating, that is, the gold plating layer cannot contain other metal components. Therefore, various metal salts cannot be used as additives to achieve certain functions in the gold electroplating process. But the pure gold coating is soft, ductile and not wear-resistant. Wear-resistant gold plating is to improve the hardness of the gold layer. Meet the functional requirements of certain electronic components and improve wear resistance. In order to obtain a coating with good wear resistance, generally, cobalt salts, nickel salts and other additives are added to an acidic gold plating solution to deposit a gold alloy coating containing a certain amount of cobalt or nickel, so as to achieve the purpose of improving wear resistance.

Gold plating solution is divided by color, commonly used rose gold is a gold-copper alloy containing 85% gold, which has high wear resistance and chemical stability, and is not easy to change color. This kind of plating solution is mainly composed of complexing agent, gold salt and copper salt.

Decorative gold alloys are mainly used in jewelry, in order to get a bright, clear and popular color. Such as gold-nickel alloy, gold-indium alloy, gold-copper alloy, gold-silver alloy, etc. The color of most gold alloys is golden yellow series, such as golden yellow, light golden yellow, rose gold. Another color is reddish, such as peach, pink, rose red. Gold-silver alloys can also be coated with green light. Gold-nickel alloys and gold-silver alloys can also obtain partial colors. At present, the quality of gold plating is better with cyanide (potassium) gold plating, and its color, adhesion and wear resistance are better than those of cyanide-free gold plating. In recent years, with the advancement of electroplating technology, new breakthroughs have been made in the gold-plated process. In the past, gold-plated jewelry only had one gold color. Gold-plated jewelry in France, the United States, and Japan now has three colors, and even more colors. Colored gold electroplating, called tricolor gold, includes rose, silver, gold, black, and blue. Generally speaking, the coating of homogeneous gold plating does not need to be too thick, it only needs to reach 2 microns. Heterogeneous gold plating should be thicker. Some countries stipulate that the gold-plated coating of such products must reach 10 microns or more. For example, the famous British Johnson & Johnson Massey Co., Ltd. requires a gold-plated coating of 12.5 microns to be qualified.
